A temperature gauge climbing higher than usual on the Monash, a sweet smell after parking, or unexplained coolant loss can all be warning signs of head gasket trouble. A failing head gasket is not always dramatic at first, but continuing to drive with one can turn a manageable repair into major engine damage.
The head gasket sits between the engine block and cylinder head. It seals combustion pressure while keeping engine oil and coolant in their separate passages. When that seal fails, heat, pressure, oil or coolant can move where it should not. The result may be overheating, poor running, internal corrosion or, in severe cases, a damaged cylinder head or engine.
Not every symptom below confirms a failed gasket. Cooling-system leaks, cracked hoses, radiator faults, worn spark plugs and injector issues can produce similar behaviour. A proper diagnosis matters before any repair work is approved.

1. The engine is overheating or running hotter than normal
