Understanding what causes car overheating can help you respond safely before a manageable cooling-system repair turns into serious engine damage.
Your engine creates a great deal of heat every time it runs. The cooling system controls that heat by circulating coolant through the engine and radiator, then releasing heat into the air. When any part of that system cannot do its job, temperatures can rise quickly. In severe cases, overheating can warp engine components, damage the cylinder head or lead to a blown head gasket.
What causes car overheating?
Overheating is not always caused by one obvious failure. A coolant leak may be the starting point, but a faulty thermostat, blocked radiator or cooling fan problem can produce similar symptoms. Correct diagnosis matters because simply topping up coolant may temporarily hide the issue without fixing the reason your car lost coolant or could not circulate it properly.
1. Low coolant or a coolant leak
Low coolant is one of the most common causes of overheating. Coolant absorbs heat from the engine and transfers it to the radiator, so there is less capacity to control engine temperature when the level is low.
Leaks can occur at radiator hoses, hose clamps, the radiator, water pump, heater core, expansion tank or radiator cap.
